What is T1?

T1 is a digital transmission link with a 1.544 Mbps capacity for upload and download speeds or about 60 times more data than a normal phone modem. This is a guaranteed bandwidth for uploads and downloads on the Internet. Compare this to DSL or cable modems and you'll find they have much slower upload speeds. This impacts sending attachments through e-Mail or sharing data between offices. Also, DSL and cable modem connections are influenced by the amount of network use. You are not guaranteed a consistent bandwidth. But with our T1 you get a higher quality, more consistent service, and you get guaranteed bandwidth from Dayton Digital Networks.

T1 uses 2 pairs of normal twisted wires, the same as in your home. T1 normally handles 24 voice conversations (each one digitized at 64 Kbps). T1 lines connect networks across remote distances. Bridges and routers connect Local Area Networks (LANs) over T1 networks. T1 links can connect directly to new PBXs and many new forms of short haul transmission, such as short haul microwave systems.

Depending on activity, a T1 line can handle dozens of people. For general Internet browsing, hundreds of users are easily able to share a T1 line. Unlike a DSL connection, a T1's dedicated connection provides guaranteed bandwidth, since the line is not shared with other users.

For voice and data, a T1 line can carry 24 digitized voice channels, or it can carry data at a rate of 1.544 megabits per second. If the T1 line is used for telephone conversations, it plugs into your office's phone system. If it carries data, it plugs into your network's router.

Point-to-Point T1: a Point-to-Point T1 is the best application for business applications like Web hosting, e-Mail Servers and conducting audio and video conferencing over the Internet. Because point-to-point offers the most guaranteed dedicated connection available, we recommend this service for companies transferring private files or using corporate VPNs and WANs.

Fractional T1: is a private, dedicated leased line that runs directly from your office to Dayton Digital Networks, providing a guaranteed transmission speed.  Leased lines provide guaranteed bandwidth as they are not shared with other users. Fractional T1 lines are cheaper than a full T1 (1.544Mbps). The most common Fractional T1 speeds are 256 Kbps and 384 Kbps.

Burstable T1: Burstable T1 service is the ideal solution for our clients requiring very high bandwidth in bursts. The full T1 bandwidth is available all the time, but if you typically use less than 512 Kbps of bandwidth, you pay a lower rate.

Double T1: Dayton Digital Networks offers Double T1 to give increased bandwidth for clients who need more than a single T1, but can't upgrade to a T3 due to costs. It uses 2 dedicated Internet T1 circuits from one router at your site to a single Internet hub at DDN.
